Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons

The man who fate has made indestructible... his name? Captain Scarlet!

The Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons Lego Ideas project is based on the classic 1967-68 British science-fiction show of the same name, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. With it’s brightly-coloured heroes, mysterious unseen aliens and iconic vehicles, Captain Scarlet remains a highly popular media franchise.

This model aims to depict the original Spectrum Patrol Car, also known as the Spectrum Saloon Car, from Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. With it’s sharp points, unusual angles and bright red colour, it was a tricky beast to translate into Lego form…but I think I’ve done a fair enough job at showing you what could potentially become a set!

About The Model

The Spectrum Patrol Car is used primarily as the casual ground travel vehicle for the worldwide security organisation Spectrum. It transports Spectrum Captains to and from missions, but on occasion, has also been used as a pursuit vehicle.

The Spectrum Patrol Car in the model can house one driver comfortably (unfortunately space limitations mean I can’t fit five as in the TV series). It is a stable model that features two removable parts; one to access the cockpit and one to access a small storage compartment in the back.

The car is made of 229 parts, and measures 2.2w x 6.7l x 2.5h in inches. The wheels have free movement, allowing the vehicle to be driven, whilst some underside studs allow it to be connected to the included display stand.

The display stand is plain black, and can fit all three included minifigures with their accessories, as well as the Spectrum Patrol Car. Two translucent green rings on the model represent the Mysterons in their most common form. The model also includes a printed tile in white denoting the property.

Accessories

Alongside the car and display stand, the model includes 3 minifigures, each with an alternate hairpiece:

  • Captain Scarlet, the British senior field agent of Spectrum. Well-trusted by Colonel White, Captain Scarlet, through contact with the Mysterons, gains powers of invincibility which he uses to stop their plans.
  • Captain Scarlet’s arch-nemesis, Captain Black, a former Spectrum agent resurrected to serve as the Mysterons’ primary agent on Earth. Once a close friend of Captain Scarlet, Captain Black now solely exists to cause chaos for his new overlords.
  • Finally, Captain Blue, Captain Scarlet’s American field partner and trusted friend. Whilst Blue’s curiosity might occasionally get him into trouble, his determination and loyalty are never questioned.

Alongside the characters, three pieces of Spectrum equipment are included:

  • The Spectrum-Issue Pistol, a trusty tool no Spectrum agent leaves out of reach.
  • The Mysteron Rifle, a short-range energy weapon that disables Mysteron agents. (I slightly re-designed the gun due to it’s incredibly similar appearance to the Mysteron Detector in Lego form).
  • The Mysteron Detector, a large neck-worn device that X-Rays people to determine if they are Mysteron, or Human.

I included these three accessories to increase the playability and options for displaying the model.

Final Notes

Thank you for reading about my project Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. I have a special bond with the show and it’s 2005 remake, and often find myself thinking about it when I’m collecting the latest colour of classic spaceman. I believe that through Lego Ideas, a model based on Captain Scarlet is possible, hopefully opening up this amazing story to a new group of fans.

The model’s total specifications are below:

  • Parts: 426
  • Dimensions: 4.8w x 8.2l x 3.3h in inches
  • Contents: 1 Spectrum Patrol Car (with two removable parts), 1 display stand, 3 minifigures, three alternate hairstyles, 3 accessories and 1 Spectrum Cargo Box

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about this project as much as I did creating it. I humbly ask that you consider supporting it here on Lego Ideas, commenting, and sharing it with friends, family, and potential Spectrum agents.

Hopefully we can make this a Lego set – I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a one-of-a-kind vehicle!

Have a great day,
