Queen Gohma

In the classic video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link must travel across time to fight the evil Ganondorf and wrest Hyrule and the powerful Triforce from his hands. Yet this quest begins deep in the forest, where Link must save the Great Deku tree from a curse that Ganondorf has cast. To do this, Link must travel inside the massive tree and defeat the parasitic armored arachnid Gohma.

While far from the most difficult fight in the series, the battle against Queen Gohma remains iconic. Fans of the series will recognize her from appearing in most The Legend of Zelda games, yet her Ocarina of Time rendition remains one of the most notable. After all, Ocarina of Time remains a fan-favorite entry to the series and Gohma serves as the head of a long sequence of memorable dungeons and bosses leading up to the momentous fight with Ganondorf himself.

As a long-time fan of the game series, I wanted to represent it in a way that would capture some of its most notable elements. As The Legend of Zelda is a series based around delving into dark dungeons and fighting off the creatures inside (and building the entire dungeon seemed a bit much), it seemed only fitting that I design this model around a boss monster. Ocarina of Time is a beloved and ground-breaking entry to the series so it would be natural to look there for inspiration. However, that still leaves so many memorable options to choose from! I decided to recreate Gohma for several reasons:

  1. Gohma is the most recognizable boss from the game. As the first boss, almost every player that picked up Ocarina of Time will have encountered her and will be able to recognize her. She and the dungeon she lurks in are in essence a long tutorial for the more complex game mechanics and expectations for the player. Not to mention, Gohma is one of the most frequently-recurring enemies in the entire The Legend of Zelda series. Even fans who've missed this game will be able to recognize her and enjoy seeing this new incarnation.
  2. Gohma represents The Legend of Zelda well. With her strange chitinous limbs and rolling massive eye, Gohma's appearance is a perfect example of the design that pervades much of the series. The player cannot break through her thick natural armor and so must use the resources they've gathered to stun her, collapsing her and leaving her weak spot (her eye) open for attack. This basic pattern is a staple of many games in the series and is telegraphed very well to the player through Gohma's design.
  3. Gohma is the first boss in the game. Link's fight with Gohma sets him off on the long path to stop Ganondorf by first dealing with his horrible curse. Still, Gohma is more than just this. She is also the first 3D boss in the series, featuring in the first 3D game of the series, debuting on the famous Nintendo 64. Gohma serves as the start of a new chapter in The Legend of Zelda and indeed video games as a whole.

I sought to recreate Gohma's design as faithfully as I could, taking creative liberties in the places where the highly-polygonal original 3D model could not achieve finer details. The result is a detailed model that maintains all of Gohma's most iconic traits: her strange three-legged stance, the claws protruding from her back, and of course her rolling, unblinking eye. All of her limbs as well as her eye are jointed to allow for posing, too. But Gohma doesn't fight alone and this model is no different. Included are two of her spawn, young Gohmas, which are also recreated in detail and built to scale with Queen Gohma. While not shown in the given images, a Link minifigure fits well in scale with these models and would be perfect for displaying a recreation of this first incredible fight on the path to defeat Ganondorf. Long-time and new fans of the series can both enjoy building and displaying one of the most notable enemies in all of The Legend of Zelda!
