Asp Explorer

This is the Asp Explorer spaceship from the video game Elite: Dangerous.

Made from over 1400 parts, this model is built to 1:219 scale. It has a nice chunky tactile feel.

The iconic Asp featured in the classic 1984 space game "Elite", and lives on with style in the 2014 reboot "Elite: Dangerous" and "Elite Dangerous: Horizons".

So what is the Asp Explorer?

Manufactured by Lakon Spaceways, this medium sized multi-crew craft is a firm favourite, particularly among galactic explorers, thanks to its ability to travel long distances. But it has also proved itself as a great general-purpose vessel for traders, bounty-hunters and pirates too. The spacecraft size is 56m/51m/19m.

Although a single commander can successfully pilot the Asp, the double-decker cockpit is optimised for a 2 person crew. The Asp is ideal for mapping star systems from space, and then landing on alien worlds to deploy a Scarab SRV for detailed surface exploration.

This was a really fun project. It is a challenging shape to recreate, with all the awkward angles! I tried to get as much detail in as I could, and use the Lego parts in interesting ways. I ended up with fewer exposed Lego studs than I was originally intending, but I like the sleek, contoured feel that this approach gives.

Also please support my previous Elite: Dangerous themed Lego project, the Scarab SRV, thanks.
