The LEGO Flood House: From the vulnerable to the resilient
Dive into the world of flood resilience with our LEGO Flood House set! Watch as a pair of terrace houses come to life, one bravely battling the floodwaters while the other stands strong and resilient. With features like a flood door, a deployable barrier and raised electrics. This set demonstrates how flood resilient design can make all the difference in protecting your home from the elements.
What is it?
The LEGO Flood House set has been designed to showcase the impacts of flooding on a home and the benefits of making a property more flood resilient.
A pair of terrace houses are shown in the set, one that is vulnerable and damaged by the flood water and the other that is flood resilient. The home that is resilient has a variety of elements that help make the house more flood resistant and recoverable. These measures all help to reduce the impact of flooding and mean that the home can be reinstated with less time, expense and stress. Helping ensure families are able to bounce back, be better prepared and more resilient to flooding.
Flood resilience measures are shown in yellow in the set to make it clear which elements are helping to change the consequences the family and their home endures. The set includes both Property Flood Resilience (PFR) strategies and a selection of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
Can you spot the PFR measures? These include: Flood door, Non-return valve, Deployable flood barrier, Automatic air brick, Flood-resilient kitchen units, Tiled floor, Raised fuse box, Sump and pump, Solid floor, Raised sockets, Sentimental items upstairs, Wall-mounted TV, Raised bookshelf / valuables, Modular furniture, Raised fridge, Foldable table and Closed cell insulation.
Can you spot the SuDS measures? These include: Rain garden, Disconnected downpipe, Water butt, Permeable paving, Flood-tolerant lawn, Tree and Planters.
The vulnerable house side of the set, reveals a range of the potential impacts of flooding. Can you spot the impacts? These include: Residents stranded, Power off, Water entering via the doors & floors, Damage to white goods and the walls, Contaminated carpet, Valuables in flood water, Rescue services deployed, Bins tipped over, Sink surcharging, Photo albums destroyed, TV floating in flood water, Heavy furniture ruined, Timber floor warping, Fast run-off from hardstandings.
The LEGO Flood House set has been developed and proposed by Blue Heart (@BLUEHEART) and The Environmental Design Studio (@TEDS), as part of the Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme. Throughout the design process we’ve reached out for feedback from many 'at risk' communities and experts throughout the flood industry and education sector.
Why did you build it?
- Urgency: Did you know that 1 in 4 homes in the UK are at risk of flooding? The impacts of floods on both properties and people can be severe and long lasting. With flood risk increasing as a result of climate change, this topic is increasing pertinent and it is vitally important to find creative ways to communicate this theme and inspire adaptation.
- Learning tool: Let's make learning fun! A LEGO set on the theme of flood resilience can be an effective hands-on learning tool that helps people to understand the impacts of flooding and benefits of flood-resilient design. Through building and playing with the set, people can learn how resilient design can help save the day. It's education disguised as playtime!
- Awareness and preparedness: By engaging with a LEGO set on the topic of flooding, communities can become more aware of the risks associated with flooding and the need for preparedness. Becoming flood champions, they'll learn the importance of being prepared and staying safe in flood emergencies.
- Encouraging problem-solving: Get those creative gears turning! Building a flood resilient home with LEGO bricks can encourage people to think critically about the challenges posed by flooding and come up with creative solutions.
