This set includes the three main masks, known by any Venetian. Little known is that they were not only used during Carnival, but had a deeper meaning and they were used for very specific purpose any day of the year.

Bauta (281 pieces)

One of the most common masks, the Bauta means obscure deeds: it was used by people who wanted anonimity for all sorts of reasons, from meeting one's lover to criminal actions. The upper lip of the mask is deformed to muffle the wearer voice, making it impossible to recognize a known person. It also allows to eat and drink without taking it off.

Since it is impossible to know who is hiding behind a Bauta, it was normal to greet anyone wearing it. No one could tell who was underneath, it could have been a nobleman as easily as it could have been a simple citizen, hence wearing a Bauta also hinted to equality.

Colombina (283 pieces)

The Colombina character comes from Commedia dell'Arte, ir represents a young woman in ragged clothes in the guise of a servant. She was sly and mischievous, often getting involved in her mistress' affairs. Though being beautiful and courted by many men, she remained loyal to her Fiance, Arlecchino.

Nowadays the mask is very popular, with many different designs and it is worn by both men and women.

Medico della peste (392 pieces)

This mask was worn by doctors, to protect them from the plague and other illnesses. It was usually used along a black coat, gloves and a hat. Burning incense was placed in the beak of the mask, since it was believed that diseases trasmitted via foul odors. People were often scared of this mask, because it was associated with sickness.

Venice was often struck by epidemics, which led to the building of Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of Saint Mary of Health), and the establishment of the feast-day of Saint Mary of Health. It was one of such epidemics that led to the Gondolas being repainted all in black in sign of mourning.

Questo set comprende le tre maschere principali, conosciute da ogni veneziano. E' poco conosciuto il fatto che non fossero usate solamente durante il Carnevale, ma che avessero un significato più profondo, venendo usate ogni giorno dell'anno.

Bauta (281 pezzi)

Una delle maschere più conosciute, la Bauta significa loschi intenti: era usata da chi voleva mantenere l'anonimato per molti motivi, dall'incontrare l'amante al commettere atti criminali. Il labbro superiore della maschera è conformato in modo da mascherare la voce di chi la indossa, rendendo impossibile riconoscere un conoscente. Rende inoltre possibile bere e mangiare senza dover togliere la maschera.

Dato che era impossibile sapere chi si celasse sotto la Bauta, era consuetudine salutare chiunque la indossase. Nessuno poteva sapere chi fosse, avrebbe potuto essere un nobile o un semplice cittadino, quindi indossare una Bauta significava anche egualità.

Colombina (283 pieces)

Il personaggio della Colombina deriva dalla Commedia dell'Arte, rappresentato da una giovane donna con dei vestiti laceri, nei panni di una serva. Era furba e maliziosa, spesso venendo coinvolta nelle vicende amorose della padrona.

Nonostante fosse bella e corteggiata da molti uomini, Colombina rimase leale al suo promesso, Arlecchino.

Oggi la maschera è molto conosciuta, con molti design differenti, e viene indossata sia dagli uomini che dalle donne.

Medico della peste (392 pezzi)

Questa maschera veniva indossata dai medici, per proteggerli dalla peste e da altre malattie. Era solitamente abbinata a un mantello, a dei guanti e a un cappello neri. Dell'incenso veniva messo nel becco della maschera, dato che si credeva che il contagio avvenisse attraverso l'aria malsana. La vista della maschera era spesso temuta, dato che veniva associata con il malessere.

Venezia era spesso afflitta da epidemie, tanto che venne costruita la Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, e venne stabilito il giorno festivo di Santa Maria della Salute. Fu una di queste epidemie a portare alla colorazione nera delle gondole, in segno di lutto.
