The Model
This is my take on the Williams FW14 Formula 1 Race Car and my first ever entry into Lego Ideas - I hope you like it!
Why I built it / Why I believe it would make a great LEGO set
I chose to build this model as it’s a car I remember vividly from watching Formula 1.
The great Nigel Mansell is an iconic driver and has always inspired me to never give up so it felt fitting to include a Lego Mini-figure modelled around him to accompany the car and drive it to victory!
I feel this driver and car combination is an underrated part of racing history and due their turn in the limelight.
I built this kit using the Studio software to learn a new skill during my rehabilitation from a serious accident where I was knocked off my bike and suffered a bleed on the brain. I used it as a way to improve my mental wellbeing and cognitive abilities after the accident and as a method of therapy. The challenge has been a fun experience and has aided my recovery so it would be amazing to see this become an actual kit as a reminder to me that even during tough times good things can be achieved if you put your mind to it!
I believe this kit would fit in with the current Speed Champion series as well as the McLaren Icon set.
The Build
I aimed to accurately incorporate as much of the historical design from my inspiration as possible and found recreating from scratch the rear and front wings to suit the body of the car the most difficult to accomplish.
I had an idea in my head of how I wanted the car to look and then used images of the car found online, as a guide to help me further visualise the build and recreate it in Studio.
To start with I used basic colours, in order to focus on forming the shape correctly.
It was very surprising and uplifting at the momentous time during the build, when I added the Williams colours. The transformation that took place was incredible and the build really started to take shape. The appearance then looked so much more alike to the memory I have had of the car since my childhood, giving me the confidence boost to make the final adjustments and alterations, resulting in the design I have submitted to Lego Ideas for you all to see.
Upgrades
I would like to add some stickers to the kit, in order to resemble the sponsors for the Williams FW14. I think these would add some extra interest and further showcase the memories accrued in my head from watching Formula 1.
Wrap Up
Thank you for taking the time to look at my Idea, I value your feedback and thoughts so please let me know what you like about my model or think I could improve on in the comments! :)
