Greater Blue-Ringed Octopus

What would anyone think that one of the most dangerous  animals is? A golf ball sized octopus, of course! Okay, this may not be the truest sounding statement, but it is very real.

The greater blue ringed octopus, Hapalochlaena lunulata, is the most venomous species of octopus (although recent studies show that all octopi are slightly venomous). The venom in its saliva, delivered through an almost unnoticeable bite, is powerful enough to kill 26 adult humans.

Fortunately for those who now fear octopi, the blue ringed octopus has a limited range in North and South Australia. (There is a surprise. Yet another deadly animal from Australia!)

In this set I have made model of a blue ringed octopus, scaled up about 3 times. All of the arms* are poseable. I used two simple clear supports, making it easy to remove from the stand. The display is very detailed and accurate right down to the suckers.

I think that even though I built this set just for fun, who wouldn’t like an official octopus set? And a one of a deadly octopus just makes it better!

*yes, arms. Tentacles are the two longer appendages on squid and cuttlefish.
