This build is based off of the Sony Sports Walkman WM-AF59. I was a teenager in the 90's and this was our 'iPod'. It was the era of the mix tape. CD's were definitely the hot thing on the market, but CD-Burners were still a good ways off. The Walkman was the affordable way you could bring your tunes wherever you went. We spent hours recording individual songs from other tapes, CD's, even the radio, into what we thought would be the best mix ever. Walkman's were music freedom.

This particular Walkman and the handful of models that were cousins to it (all in that bright yellow and gray) were the models everyone wanted. They had the latest tech (Auto-Reverse), and were nearly indestructible.

I've done my best to keep this MOC in a 1:1 scale (within the width of one brick) in the hopes of triggering that nostalgic feeling every time you look at it. Great effort went in to keeping the entire exterior smooth so that you get a great 'hand feel' when holding the model. The latch and lid open and you can even load or unload the included Lego cassette. Likewise, the headphones can be plugged in to the chassis so that you can display this model in whatever way you like. Perhaps build it, and then have it sitting around the room and see who picks it up or doesn't notice it is Lego and not the real thing.

Every generation has it's distinctive music device. in the 50's it was FM radios, in the 60's and 70's it was the turntable and 8-track, in the 80's it was the boombox. the last great analog music device was the Walkman, and while it was born in the 80's... it peaked in the 90's. the 00's had the iPod, but by then we had gone digital and soon 'playing music' was just a feature that nearly anything could do.

Join me in celebrating the end of the analog era. Re-live the feeling of searching for that perfect song and being able to hear it all to yourself wherever you wanted.

Build this Walkman.
