THE IDEA
Lisbon is a city full of charm, where history, culture, and tradition blend harmoniously. This project pays tribute to its unique essence by bringing together some of its most iconic symbols.
TRAM 28, THE HEART OF LISBON’S STREETS
One of the most famous trams in the world, Tram 28 is more than just public transport, it’s a journey through history. Its bright yellow carriages navigate the city's steep hills and narrow streets, offering breathtaking views and a nostalgic connection to Lisbon’s past. Beloved by locals and tourists alike, it remains one of the city's most charming traditions.
TYPICAL LISBON HOUSE, A GLIMPSE INTO LOCAL LIFE
Lisbon’s traditional houses reflect the city's character, with aged facades, traditional construction, and characteristic tiled roofs. Many of these homes feature small balconies filled with potted plants and laundry hanging from windows, adding to the authentic charm of Lisbon’s streets. These houses, built close together, create a warm and inviting atmosphere, showcasing the true essence of local life.
HIDDEN ALLEYWAYS AND FADO, THE STORIES AND SOUL OF LISBON
Beyond the main avenues and squares, Lisbon hides a network of small alleys and winding passageways that reveal the city’s most authentic side. These "becos" and "vielas" hold centuries of history, where neighbors chat from their windows, laundry hangs between buildings, and echoes of Fado fill the air.
Born in Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods, Fado is the music of nostalgia and longing (saudade). Sung with deep emotion and accompanied by the Portuguese Guitar, it tells stories of love, loss, and daily life. Traditional Fado houses keep this UNESCO-recognized heritage alive, offering visitors an intimate and authentic musical experience. Together, these hidden paths and heartfelt melodies capture the true essence of Lisbon.
FERNANDO PESSOA STATUE, A TRIBUTE TO A LITERARY ICON
One of Portugal’s greatest poets, Fernando Pessoa, left a profound mark on Portuguese literature. His statue sits at the entrance of a historic café, where he often wrote while enjoying a coffee. Today, visitors sit beside his bronze figure, taking a photo or simply reflecting on his words, which continue to inspire generations.
TRADITIONAL CAFÉ, A PLACE OF ENCOUNTERS AND REFLECTION
Lisbon’s café culture is an essential part of daily life. Locals gather in cafés to enjoy a bica (espresso), a pastel de nata, and a moment of conversation or contemplation. These cafés have long been meeting places for intellectuals, artists, and everyday Lisboners, capturing the spirit of the city through lively discussions and quiet reflections.
PORTUGUESE PAVEMENT, A WORK OF ART BENEATH YOUR FEET
One of Lisbon’s most iconic features is its traditional mosaic pavement, known as "calçada portuguesa". Crafted by skilled artisans, these pavements often form intricate patterns, from waves to geometric designs, adding an artistic touch to the city's sidewalks. While beautiful, their polished stones can become slippery when wet, making them both a treasure and a challenge for pedestrians.
PICKPOCKETS, THE UNWANTED TRADITION
Among the charm and history, Lisbon also has its fair share of pickpockets, especially in tourist-heavy areas. The busy trams, bustling cafés, and crowded viewpoints are prime spots for these skilled individuals. While they are an unfortunate reality, they have also become part of the city's folklore, serving as a reminder to always keep an eye on your belongings while enjoying Lisbon’s wonders.
ROASTED CHESTNUT VENDORS, THE SCENT OF LISBON’S STREETS
Lisbon’s streets are filled with the unmistakable aroma of roasted chestnuts. Street vendors, with their small charcoal ovens, offer these warm treats wrapped in paper cones, providing a nostalgic and comforting taste of the city. This simple yet iconic experience brings both locals and visitors together in a timeless ritual.
