Tramp Steamer

Around the turn of the last century naval trading was mostly done by ocean liners and tramp steamers. Where the big ocean liners were owned by the big companies and had fixed schedules, the smaller steamboats were owned by its masters and relied on the unscheduled shuttling of cargo from port to port. A tramp steamer would load the cargo that happened to have the best profit margin on sales or shipping costs and bring it to the port where that cargo was needed.

The tramp steamer acquired a certain mystique from the seemingly free-spirited nature of the tramp trade and from the relative ease of gaining passage on such a ship. This class of ship often accepted crew members for short stints. This provided a way for adventurous youngsters to see the world on a shoestring budget.

This set consists of 2469 elements and depicts the tramp steamer and a pier as displaystand.

The steamer is set up modular for easy access to the wheelhouse, captains hut, galley and cargo hold. It’s name “ Bonaventura” comes from the Latin “Bona Adventura” which means a good fate, a good future.

Two pillars on the pier can easily be removed so the ship can be displayed alongside the pier.

 From left to right:

Toucan: With a tropical backstory in mind, the toucan was added.
The master: Owner and captain of the Bonaventura.
Hermit crab: Just couldn’t resist adding this little bugger to the set.
The deckhand: Ever since his first apperance as the assistant, it’s impossible not to give him a role.
Seagull: Now, what would a nautical-themed set be without one?
