Our Build in the Local News!

Our build was featured in a local (we live North of Boston, MA in the USA) Childrens Museum that had an overall LEGO themed exhibit! Members could submit their own creations, and during the four week show voting was allowed for Best In Show, which I'm happy to report ended up being our Emmet's Apartment!

Still hoping for more support- it's definitely the inability to update our Tags! Here's hoping they revise this policy...

"Drink Expensive Coffee!"

This is an addition to the apartment portion and fills out the base plate nicely. Truth be told, this really could be a set unto itself. Unlikely that it would actually be included in a retail version with the Apartment already pretty large, but you never know I guess. Plus, a number of people here suggested it, and it looks great as part of the overall build, so...
We give you: The Coffee Shop from The LEGO Movie!

This was a lot of fun to build, and since the scene lasts for all of about 12 seconds in the movie, we had quite a few details to work out for ourselves. I especially like the espresso machine, the condiments area (to the right) and the little pastry case next to the door. In one shot you can see Emmet's back door (a few details added to that too).

Note: Obviously in the movie this was no where near Emmet's actual apartment building. He drives most of the way through the city before he enters, but still, it is a plausible retail space that you find in many real world apartment buildings.
Everything is standard except the custom decal and the hand painted dude behind the counter.

As we finished up the build my son observed: That guy would get really tired being the only one behind the counter all day!

Business is brisk!

Tasty looking pastries in the glass case to the left.

Emmet's back door is to the right...Hanging with your pals and a cup O java.

It's all in the details...1st Update

A fairly thorough update to the project; top to bottom! Some of it is based on suggestions from the Comments section (like adding exterior details to the facade) and in other cases from our own additional study of the actual scene in the movie. Almost every room has something changed or new! Some areas I wasn't able to photograph as well the first time around, so I added those shots in just to allow everyone to see it better. I still have yet to figure out how to get a good shot inside the show, but suffice to say we built the hardware almost exactly the way the movie version was.

Based on suggestions, we are thinking of adding in the Coffee Shop behind his living space, since there is this good size "open" section. Stay tuned for that, and thanks for everyone's support!

Here's a list of the main updates:

  1. The dresser in the bedroom is now brown like in the movie
  2. The computer desk has been re-sized more like the movie's version and I added a decal to the screen
  3. The entire upper section of the build (where the ceiling would be, has been redesigned to be level and have a consistent structure
  4. A detailed front facade has been added (still removable as before). The facade is an interpretation, not a duplication of that of the movie. As I mentioned before, the one in the movie cannot, for many reasons, actually exist in relation to the interior in the movie. The windows are different, the sizing is different, and there is no door out from Emmet's hallway onto a balcony. That being said, we got a lot of ideas from the general "feel" of it and went with that.
  5. The kitchen now better reflects that of the movie with 2/3 walls having the brown and tans stripes, the back wall has a clock now, etc.
  6. The kitchen has a more detailed stove/oven and we added a range hood above it (not in movie but we think it looks more complete this way)
  7. We added an exterior awning outside the kitchen door.
  8. It was pointed out the faucets we used are no longer available, so we took those out and made new ones from standard LEGO parts.
  9. A better mirror has been added behind the bathroom sink.
  10. We re-worked how the three faux movie posters are hung so they are attached right to the wall.
  11. Above the bookcase in the living room, we noticed what might be an in-wall air conditioner, or some sort of heating vent. We're not sure, but it was in the film so we added it!
