Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to
check out my LEGO Idea; Chess (Travel Edition).
Chess is a very old game, it goes back almost 15
centuries. As we speak millions of people are still playing it all around the world.
The game has been changed a lot throughout all those years and it comes in many
variations and sizes. Almost every brand or theme has a chess set these days, including
LEGO. Did you know they even released a LEGO Chess videogame in 1998? I loved
to play that game with friends and family back in the day.
The coolest chess sets are often large, bulky
and expensive, some are even life-sized. Those sets are not easy to move or
take with you and some people even have dedicated chess tables for them.
Thankfully there are plenty of small scale chess sets available as well. These
ones you can easily transport, but they all have one major downside; they’re
not made out of LEGO! Until now that is...
Chess (Travel Edition) is a full-fledged chess
set that you can take with you on-the-go. Bring it over to a friend or even take
it with you on your next holiday. It’s also comfortable just sitting on a coffee
table or bookshelf as a nice decorative piece or conversation starter.
The board itself is foldable and can be locked to prevent it from opening during
transport. When folded, all chess pieces can be easily stored inside of the
board. All pieces have their own secured spot, so there won’t be any unwanted
confrontation between them when they’re off the battlefield.
During the game, the hinges are secured to prevent the board from accidentally folding.
A few plates (which double as the locks) are used to add stability to the board
and they also protect the hinges.
Please make sure to check out all the pictures to get an idea of the setup process.
I think this would make a nice LEGO product for
the following reasons:
- Chess is being played worldwide (no regional
or cultural limitations)
- Chess is timeless (chess has been around for a long time and is here to stay)
- Chess is suitable for all ages (4+ probably to suit LEGO guidelines)
- Chess is not tied to a single IP (intellectual property)
- Chess stimulates the mind and fine motor skills (just like LEGO)
- Chess is multiplayer, it’s a social game (you can play solo as well if you
want)
- Chess (travel edition) is small, portable and affordable (only 336 bricks!)
- Chess can be transformed into checkers (another fun game to play)
This Idea started out as a LEGO activity (Celebrating everything sports!) and since then I have
completely reworked the board to make it foldable. This is my first LEGO Idea and I would like to
thank everyone who has motivated me to post it here, it was fun.
If you have any questions or remarks please feel
