The Inspiration
The classic stories of giant sea creatures attacking vulnerable ships at sea have been passed down for ages. They represent the seemingly infinite unknown of the open ocean. These stories are what inspired me to create this Lego set.
However, I have created an octopus, while the monster in those sea monster stories is usually a squid of enormous size called a kraken. Many believe kraken stories came about from sailors spotting giant squids, which are enormous but not large enough to sink a ship.
So why is mine an octopus? I had the idea for a cute art piece of a little octopus playing in a bathtub with some toy ships. Octopi don’t get as large as their squid cousins: squids have been discovered to be as long as 60 feet, but octopi only grow to 16 feet. The drawing idea originally meant to depict a little octopus playing and pretending to be big and strong like their cousin the squid!
The Evolution
While creating this drawing, I realized I wanted to draw a more realistic octopus, So I redesigned the idea to work as a poster, which you can see here:
After creating this piece, I realized it would make an even better Lego poster! This led me to recreate my drawing as a hangable Lego poster in BrickLink Studio. I used the small flat round studs to create a classic looking Lego art piece.
However, it still didn’t feel right. Even though I truly loved how the flat piece looked, I felt like more was needed. Octopi move so interestingly with their tentacles, and I felt a flat piece didn’t do them justice. This inspired me to create my first layered 3D art Lego Idea! I wanted this piece to have dimension, like the octopus is reaching out of the water in the frame for the ships.
The Build
The heightened rounded edges of the tentacles show how they interweave through each other and their grip on the ships. Small flat rounded pieces were used for the suction cups. I wanted to use the primary colors blue, red, and yellow to draw your eyes to different parts of the Lego set. The blue of the waters, the red of the octopus, and the yellow of its eyes and the flags help lure your eyes to the tentacle-gripped ships.
The Frame
I created a brown frame to imitate a classic wooden frame with golden corners. I felt this type of frame fit the look for any sailor or sea lover's home. I think this frame also paired well with the brown “wooden” ships to create consistency throughout the Lego set.
The Back
The poster is made with twelve connected 16x16 Technic pieces as its base. On the back of this poster are two Technic wall attachment pieces, allowing you to place this Lego piece on any wall in your home!
The Idea: Why this poster would make a great Lego Idea set
This Lego Idea set is great for animal lovers, art lovers, and sea lovers alike! Truly anyone who wants to spice up a wall in their home with a creative, bright, and fun Lego piece would enjoy this Lego Idea. This Lego set is like an artistic puzzle. Each section is different from the last, but when connected, they flow together to create a wonderful 3D Lego poster.
I created this Lego Idea in BrickLink Studio 2.0. It currently sits at a little over 2,700 pieces. This piece also passed BrickLink Studio’s Stability test.
