The Idea:
The Giving Tree is a pivotal children’s book written by Shel Silverstein in 1964. The book follows the friendship between a boy and a tree. As the boy grows, he wants more in life than the tree's friendship, and the tree gives everything she has to make the boy, and herself, happy. It’s a book that stays with children through adulthood. Though it is sad, The Giving Tree remains in the hearts of its readers, and a staple in children’s literature today.
Why I made it:
Just like Lego, The Giving Tree has been a part of my life since childhood and has only grown more meaningful over time. I wanted to make a set that would capture the hearts of children and the childhood memories of adults. After a bit of thinking, The Giving Tree felt like a given! I think that this set would be the perfect build to sit down and make with your kids and recapture an unforgettable part of childhood.
The Build:
The build has 944 pieces and includes two minifigures. It consists of a display base and the tree itself. I wanted to stay true to the look of the tree on the book's cover, but getting the shape of the tree was a challenge. The classic curve is made using hinges, slopes, and wedges. The leaves were made using hinges and skeleton arms.
The trunk and leaves of the tree can be removed. By replacing two pieces and adding two more, the tree can be transformed into the stump that remains at the end of the book.
Altogether, this set makes for a perfect display piece for an adult's desk or a child’s bedroom.
I hope you enjoy my build. Please consider leaving feedback, I would love to hear what you think!
