Please allow me to introduce you to my newest Lego Idea; BRICKBOTZ! My BrickBotz Idea is a playset of endlessly customizable, fully articulated, generic action figures!
The BrickBotz playset comes with 12 fully articulated skeletons, 25 skin packs, 50 accessories, 6 pairs of fully articulated wings, 2 skateboards, 2 pairs of roller skates and 2 stands.
Each BrickBot is made up of a “skeleton” which is composed of light and dark bluish gray elements and a monochromatic “skin” made of a single Lego color. There are 13 joints in the skeleton which makes for plenty of mobility and fun and exciting poses. The skin tiles are designed to be easily removed, so you can switch skins without deconstructing the whole skeleton. Although the skin packs all come in one uniform color, there are no rules about mixing and matching, so there’s an endless rainbow of possibilities!
In addition to the basic skeleton forms, there are add-ons to customize your BrickBotz, such as 6 sets of fully articulated wings and special tail pieces, all of which create an even larger assortment of combinations and looks for your BrickBotz!
Aside from customizations of the body, there are brick-built accessories to enhance your BrickBotz play such as 2 skateboards, 2 sets of roller-skates and even 2 clear transparent BrickBotz stands to allow for flying, falling and swimming poses!
So where did the idea come from? Well, my younger son is into action figures. He loves to collect certain famous super heroes, but what he’s mostly attracted to are the really articulated figures they have because he enjoys posing them in interesting ways and then saving them in pics on his phone. I wanted to design Lego figures for him to enjoy in that same way that were generic, unaffiliated with any comic book or brand or IP. Just cool guys to play with. I wanted them to be not only expressive and posable, but durable and rugged; able to be played with without constantly falling apart as some builds are want to do… I wanted them to feel more like toys you could play with and less like models only to be displayed. In other words I wanted minimum maintenance and maximum FUN! These BrickBotz are what I came up with.
The BrickBotz are designed very simply, their build, very streamlined. I tried not to over-complicate them because I didn’t want them to be fragile. The pieces are chosen not only to (as accurately as possible) convey the shapes of the body masses but to bond well to each other structurally, giving the design both strength and visual appeal.
Each BrickBotz action figure has 13 points of articulation and 2 built in ‘stops’ on the spine to prevent an inhuman range of motion. I designed BrickBotz to be balanced and anatomically akin to the human form so the poses would feel real and natural. The wing pack expansion adds another 8 points of articulation (4 per wing) and if you stick on a tail that would round out a fully-loaded BrickBot at 22 points of movement! So much motion! The poses are endless!
I wanted to give these action figures a variety of props they could hold in their hands because it adds character and story, but I wanted to stay away from violence so rather than weapons, I chose to arm my BrickBotz with sticks and tools and mundane, everyday items (like fish or apples) so they can build and entertain rather than fight and destroy. Additionally each BrickBotz skin has a different faceplate which adds unique personalities to each of your characters in play. But the good news is; it’s Lego and the is the sky is the limit! So there’s no end to the customization you can have for your very own BrickBotz!
