Reaper and Seamoth
For my very first Lego Ideas submission and Product Idea, I built the agile "Seamoth" submersible and the terrifying Reaper Leviathan from the equally beautiful and terrifying underwater videogame "Subnautica". I've tried to find a good balance between doing justice to their amazing design and playability, as most official Lego sets do.
Subnautica?
Now you might be thinking; "Great, another build from a franchise I know nothing about.", but this isn't only for Subnautica fans. There are a lot of people out there who loved the Atlantis and Aquazone themes, myself included. Subnautica also has this kind of setting, only difference is; its on an alien planet. This setting allows for much more creativity when designing underwater creatures or vehicles, whether they are existing creatures from the game, or from your imagination. This is one of the reasons why I and many other Subnautica fans think a Lego Subnautica set would be awesome.
Features
As I mentioned before, I try to find a balance between the actual design and the playability, much like many existing Lego sets. This is why, for example, the Reaper has many socket-ball connections to allow for a lot of moveability and thus, interactivity.
The Reaper:
This is one of Subnautica's most feared creatures and also one of the most recognizable ones.
Living in dark, murky waters, the Reaper loves to sneak up on Seamoths and destroy them with his powerful mandibles.
- Head: The head has the most moveability (able to look in any direction forward), as it is the most recognizable and important part of the Reaper.
- Mandibles: The mandibles on the head can move up and down and can even fit the Seamoth between them, like in the game.
- Fins: The two large, point fins attached to the upper body can move in lots of directions to simulate the smimming movement of this Leviathan.
- Body: The rest of the body can also move, but only horizontally to assure a stable build and to mimic its snake-like swimming movement.
The Seamoth:
The Seamoth, according to the wiki, is a "small, versatile one-person submersible". This vehicle allows for lots of exploration, but can also attract bigger creatures...
- Cockpit: The cockpit of the Seamoth can open its side panels so you can take out or put in the minifigure and included with the build.
- Battery: At the back of the submersible you can find the power cell which is used to power this sub. Made of two studs, the power cell can be removed to be replaced with a fully charged one.
- Torpedos: Of course, every submarine need torpedos, and the Seamoth surely will in order to escape the fearsome Reaper. The torpedos are two studs that can be fired using the stud shooters on the vehicle (I know not everybody loves stud shooters, but they are the best option for this design and for playability).
The Minifigure:
The minifigure is based of the protangonist of the game, Ryley Robinson, but can also be your own version of a stranded explorer!
- Mask: The minifigure wears a diving mask which resembles the one from the game, with a visor that can open up!
- Knife: The minifigure handles a standard Survival Knife, which is the only weapon the player has, and is mostly used to procure samples of Fauna, as a knife doesn't help much against giant sea monsters.
Extra pieces and Info:
The build includes 9 extra pieces, five used for the "invisible" standard for the Seamoth, and four for building a fired torpedo. All of these pieces can be seen in the last picture.
Reaper pieces: 275
Seamoth pieces (+extras) 158
Total pieces: 433
Fun Fact: One of the Reapers is lovingly called "Sammy" by the community, so this set could be Sammy and the Seamoth!
Thank you!
Thank you to all the kind redditors who encouraged this project, to Lego for being awesome, to Subnautica for being terrifying but beautiful, but most importantly, thank you for reading this!
