So I started thinking: what can be built that would result in a relatively small but unique set by bringing something new to the train department?</span></div><div><br></div><div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The answer I came with: the </span><strong>EF66</strong><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">, a </span><strong>Bo'Bo'Bo' locomotive</strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong>The idea</strong></div><div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">LEGO fans may have noticed that most train sets come with a locomotive that has a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement (2 bogies with 2 axles each), and this is for a good reason, as adding more wheels without articulating the frame (like on the Crocodile Locomotive set) makes it harder to take curves, to the point it causes a derailment. That said, what if we build a locomotive with an extra bogie that still can manage the curves? In real life, Bo'Bo'Bo' locomotives (3 bogies, 2 axles each) must have some side motion in the center bogie in order to manage curves, and translating this mechanism to LEGO would make this new and unique set with a technique never used before in official train sets.</span></div><div><br></div><div><strong>The model</strong></div><div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">This build is based on the JNR EF66, an iconic japanese electric locomotive destined for both freight and passenger services. </span></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Features</strong></div><ul><li><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Built in the standard 6-7 stud width so it blends and looks cohesive with other official train sets, specially when connected with the typical freight cars from City sets.</span></li><li><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Pantograph design based on the ones from the Crocodile Locomotive set, but smaller so it fits the scale while keeping functionality.</span></li><li><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Easy to remove roof for interior access.</span></li><li>2 standard bogies with rotation motion, and a middle bogie with both rotation and side sliding motion.</li><li><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The piece count is 628, including the driver minifigure.</span></li><li><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The space inside is more than enough to fit the required components for motorization, which should be included by default to make the set complete and compelling.</span></li></ul><div><br></div><div><strong>Some GIFs of the bogie mechanism</strong></div><div><img src="https://ideascdn.lego.com/media/generate/lego_ci/6e705760-470d-40ee-8561-f457d0a49248/resize:1200:675/webp"><img src="https://ideascdn.lego.com/media/generate/lego_ci/e5f674a4-5141-4370-8fa8-b0e0e4f63e8b/resize:1200:675/webp"></div><div><img src="https://ideascdn.lego.com/media/generate/lego_ci/b09c23da-4d2b-4491-881a-53e0af891c8c/resize:1200:675/webp"></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Why would LEGO fans like this set?</strong></div><div>As stated before, I'm aiming towards a train set that can reach a wider public by being more accessible, functional and unique.
