Dutch Bunny Rabbit

Good day, and welcome to my Ideas submission - a (near life-size) Bunny Rabbit.

This specific critter is a Dutch rabbit, also known as Hollander or Brabander; a once popular breed of rabbit easily identified by the alternating colour pattern.

The set itself features a posable head: the neck turns, and the ears rotate and pivot to create the unique personalities which each rabbit has - ears can be very expressive. I aimed to keep to "basic" bricks in this build so that it can be enjoyed by all ages and so breed-colour variations could be created. Did you know that there are over 300 known breeds of domestic rabbits around the world?

I built this set for a number of reasons:

The initial inspiration to create the model came from my partner, who loves rabbits, and her pet bunnies. I wanted to create a life-size model for her to build as a display piece. After the first version, I decided that a static block of bricks could be better, so I refined the model: reshaping the rabbit overall, adding the neck, ear joints (for upright, lop, or 'helicopter' ears), an accessory stud, and colour variations.

I also build and submit this set to Lego Ideas as a means to create awareness. Pet rabbit abandonment is an issue that often goes unnoticed. Many people adopt rabbits without fully understanding their needs and long-term commitment. Domesticated rabbits can live over a decade. Lack of diligence and understanding leads to a high rate of abandonment. Rabbits require specific care, social interaction, and a safe environment to thrive. When these needs are not met, owners may find themselves overwhelmed and choose to abandon their pets. Living in the Pacific Northwest, and its amicable climate, we also have some who choose to abandon rabbits to the wild. This not only causes distress and suffering for the rabbits as they lack the ability to survive in the wild, but abandonment also places burden on animal shelters, rescue organizations, and veterinary services.

* I write this statement having the awareness that all pets, regardless of species, each face acts of human mistreatment; rabbits are not alone in this plight. Raising awareness about responsible pet ownership overall and the consequences of abandonment is crucial to addressing this problem. Please consider animal adoption from a rescue or shelter: save a life, do not just buy a friend. *

While a simpler build, this set would make a great addition to any Lego and/or animal-lovers collection - who wouldn't like a cute bunny companion to have in their living room, office, or bedroom? The posing and accessory-stud allows everyone to add their own personal or seasonal touch to their set and make it stand out.
