Hansel and Gretel: Treat or Trick?

What is it?
Bursting from the gilded, bookmarked pages of a leather-bound storybook, this stunning double-sided display model is a fresh take on the classic fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel". The front of the cottage is a treat that is deceptively appealing to the two poor, starving children. But at the back of the cottage, the witch’s true nature is revealed. The set includes a mini doll witch with a broom and fork, and a mini doll Hansel and Gretel with a pretzel or baguette in hand.

Treat
  • Come wander the candystone rocky road
  • Drink from the chocolate fountain
  • Harvest honey or pick lollies growing from the fairy floss tree
  • Take a bite from its curly chocolate trunk
  • Lick a giant candy cane, lollipop, mushroom-shaped jelly or liquorice allsort
  • Break a bar of chocolate from the window shutters or door
  • Lick icing from the windowsill or roof
  • Nibble a croissant, pretzel or baguette from the roof or door
  • Break off part of the chocolate wafer doorway
  • Enjoy the cookie doormat or rip off a chocolate or candy roof tile.

Trick
All is not what it seems! There is no back door; all the walls are brick; iron bars, critters and silver cobwebs abound and the darkened windows are either shuttered or boarded up – it’s a trap! Most sinister is the quadruple-flue chimney and the low bars where Hansel will be trapped. This is not a house where children should trick or treat for candy!

Why I built it
"Hansel and Gretel" is a classic fairy tale of courage and ingenuity in the face of adversity and evil, but also has a sinister twist that is perfect for a Halloween theme.

Why I believe it would make a great set
  1. Unique: This uniquely double-sided creation can be rotated for display depending on mood or season.
  2. Young and old: This set is playable for imaginative retellings of this classic tale for younger builders, and a beautiful double-sided display model for adults. It can inspire a love of literature and stories in younger builders, and nostalgia for older readers of the tale.
  3. Any gender: This set and story is inclusive.
  4. Halloween or any time of year: As a classic, this tale is suitable for any time of year, but it is also suitable as a seasonal release as the perfect Halloween-themed set that asks the question: trick or treat?
