What's in the box? For Billy, it was a mogwai... a mogwai called Gizmo... and everyone else wanted one too. But, well... we've seen what can go wrong with that. So how about a Lego version instead? Perhaps one that you don't have to worry about bright lights, getting wet or feeding after midnight... and it's still as cute, right?
Well, here's my Lego Idea project: A box, made to mimic the one from the movie, but at a more compact size... that contains a small mogwai of your own... and with the press of a button on the back of the box, it'll peek out to check things are safe.
It was made in Stud.io and uses only existing pieces, but has a couple of printed pieces. Mainly the box detailing (Which is done as 2 different 1x2 tile pieces, but could also be done as a 1x3 piece and a 2x2 tile piece) and Gizmo's smile (another 1x2 piece). These could also be done as stickers. I've also made the build with the pieces I already have, and - if I do say so myself - looks good... and the kinetic part functions too! :D
I've been a life-long Lego fan, but only in the past few years have I properly delved into making my own creations with it... usually something small and cute, the odd diorama, or just enjoying the challenge of making something that exists in a compact Lego form. I recently had the idea to design a Gizmo that would retain the cuteness of the character and the idea of one peeking from the box came to me. However, I wasn't satisfied with it just looking cute, so I thought I should make it move too. There's a small lever inside the box that essentially pokes his head up so he can peek out at the world before hiding back inside. It's all my own work, from scratch, so I'm very pleased with it, and several friends have suggested that I try and get it made officially. Mainly so they could have one too.
So... let's see if we can make that happen, shall we? It's nearly the 40th anniversary of the movie - so it'd be a great item to celebrate that with, or at any time really. The movie still seems to conjure up that same adoration for the character that I had, and hopefully it will do for a long time... if not, hey - it's a very cool toy still! :)
