Yellow Pitcher Plant - Sarracenia Flava

Welcome!

Introducing the Yellow Pitcher plant - Sarracenia flava - now in Lego! I love the intricacy and detail of plant and flower models and the increasing complexity of the designs over recent years. They've been inspiring and very intriguing. So here is a new and unusual addition to the Lego garden, one to stand out from the crowd.

Pitcher plants

Native to the Eastern seaboard of the USA, now found in greenhouses all over the world, these plants trap insects to make up for the nutrient-poor soil of the marshes in which they grow. Specially adapted leaves grow as trumpets, or pitchers, up to 30cm/12in high. Ranging in colour from yellow, through green, and even to scarlet and white, there are many different species - this is perhaps best known. Perhaps I shall next move on to one of the others.

Lego tubes

The build and design process has been a long one, and undoubtedly will continue! Trying to form elongated, tapering tubes from angled parts is a proper challenge. I was originally inspired by the shape of just one part - how the wheel arches are shaped so much like the lip of the pitcher - and it must have gone through at least 10 versions already, but we're am getting there.

Each pitcher can be moved, turned and arranged individually, and posed to suit the space where it is displayed. The rhizome from which the leaves grow is partially buried in the peat, but it is just bringing forth a new shoot. The flowers of these plants are also peculiar and unique, having to grow on long stalks to avoid catching the same insects they also need for pollination.

If you, like me, are intruiged to see this grow, support this one on it's way! Thanks in advance.
