Scooby-Doo: Zombie Island

Hi everyone!

This makes for my 7th submission. With the sad result that the Ravenswood mansion not getting approved, I thought I would make another take on a scooby-doo set since it seemed to be so appreciated! This time based on a very beloved movie of mine... Scooby-doo: Zombie island!

This is one of my favorite movies from the animated ones since I was a child. I really loved it for being unique in the sense of the monsters not being people in masks… but actuall monsters! This would make for a suprising turn of events for childhood me. Re-watching the movie recently, I thought that I would try and base an idea on it!

THE MOVIE
It was quite tricky since when I watched the movie I noticed that some things where different in each shot. For example the house in some shots had 5 windows on the upper floor and sometimes 4. The color of the house also shifted quite alot between light pinks, purples and blues to sometimes just white. So I just had to make a decision myself. In the end, I opted for a light violet color on the fasad. I think it looks much nicer than a bright white!
I first wanted to make a full house that opens up the middle. However, the piece count for these builds go up very quickly and I could not do that. Sadly all the details consume a lot of pieces. This one stands at 4300 pieces and 3800g (135 oz). Quite low in weight, but high in pieces.

THE SET
The building itself is a very simple old big house, almost mansion-like size. One thing I noted people saying on the previous building was to make it modular in the sence of taking the floors apart. So I did that here! You can now split it into 3 parts!

The bottom entrence floor has the porch on the outside. There was not many shots of this area to look at so I went with a stone foundation that is common in older houses that has a celler. The Inside has a common lounge area. You also have access to the stairs and the kitchen. Because what scooby-doo set is complete without a kitchen? and yes, the fridge is openable and has food inside!
The walls have the same color as in the movie. They have a brown wooden base and then a sand green color to the walls. This was tricky, to make so the outside has a detailed facade in the light violet color while the inside has a different one. Without making the walls 2 studs thick. I am very happy that I managed to resolve that! it really is a color suprise on the inside when you turn it around.

The middle floor consists of a bedroom and bathroom. Since it is a ordinary house in the room layout there isn't much special there. I did try to keep the principle of the walls here aswell. However, they are orange here instead, just like in the movie. I always try to recreate scenes from the movie with these builds. So the bedroom is supposed to be Shaggy's with the ghost they encounter in the mirror. Just like the movie! I also added the text in the kitchen that morgan moonscar edge into the wall in the kitchen bellow. The stairs however have a trapdoor above them! Can't have a scooby-doo set without the traps!

The 3rd floor has another bedroom on it, I made it Simone's. Also it has a living area. I kind of didn't know what to fill it out with other than that. Since it is a big house it mainly consists of bedrooms, bathrooms, livingrooms etc. I thought about a library but since it was so thin it was hard to make it work with the comunication. I might go back and edit that in the future if another idea springs to mind.

SIDE BUILDS
The only thing I am sad about is not being able to recreate the staircase in the house that has the passage way to the cellar. That has the altar for the ceremony. I did however notice they have a scene at a cemetary on the island with a crypt. So I made the crypt into the altar place.
The crypt is a small build on the side that can open up completly on both sides. Inside you have the altar with the dial that tarcks the moonlight/time. There is a hole in the roof that opens up to the sky just like in the movies.

With feedback on the previous set idea, I added a much requested mystery mashine! I based it on the original one but made some changes since I am not allowed to straight up copy it. The biggest one being adding a pair of doors on the back. The old one had the upper halfs of the car open up. I removed this feature so the walls are solid in place and only these double doors open up. The new roof can also be removed. Some other small changes like smooth tires, more red interior in the front seat etc.

I also added the tree at the front of the house. It is seen through out the movie and has a scene with a lot of the cats up in it. So I thought it would be nice to add in the build. Nothing special about it really, just a tree with cats in it. What is it to dislike?

I also have some small bushes around the set. Since it is a chili farm, I thought that it would neith to have some small chilibushes. I think they fit in well.

I wanted to add the ferry aswell, but the piececount wa sgetting a little bit out of hand. Might add it in later since I have some room, but I would like to not make the idea the maximum piececount.

MINIFIGURES
I tried to add all the crusual ones to the set. Obviously it is the whole mystery gang. I couldn't add all of them into the BL studio program, but I would not mind if it is the same as before. Maybe just updated.
The others would be:
  • Simone Lenoir, the owner of the house and a werecat
  • Lena Dupree, her maiden that welcomes the gang to the island and a werecat
  • Beau Neville, Detective disguised as a gardener
  • Jacques, Ferry driver and a werecat
  • 2 zombie pirates, preferably Morgan moonscar being one of them
  • 3 alterations of the other 3 in their werecat form. Since they transform quite substantionaly and their clothes get torn apart etc I would prefer complete different figures in this form. But would be open to alternate faces and headpieces maybe for the transformed shape.

I made some simple proposal of Simone and Lena and how they could look. Some existing pieces represented the detective quite well, aswell as the ferry driver. The zombies and werecats would maybe need new parts so I did not make a design for them, just included them with current parts since i can't make any new on my own in the submission. But this is the selection I would go for!

FINAL THOUGHTS
In the end I am very happy with the build. Especially how the walls came together with the facade and inside being so different. I think I captured most of the movies scenes that is a little bit of a standout. It captures the esthethic of the house, both inside and outside, quite well. It has the mystery mashine and also some surroundings making for a great display and potential playpiece.

Untill next time, Thank you for reading & supporting!

Best and kindest regards,
Tobnac
