How/why I did this
40 years ago, the Classic Space story was taking place on the moon. But that was only the beginning.
Today, I want to bring the Classic Space theme into a new era. I don’t see it as neo-classic, it’s not a reboot, it’s not a modern redesign either. I want to build the next chapter of the story. But I have grown up, the new Galaxy Explorer too (I used it as a guide to create this X1 craft, obviously). I tried not to betray the legacy of Classic Space, so that you can recognize it at the first glimpse. I would like the Galaxy Explorer to stand next to it and fit together. And I want to offer the possibilities that allows today bricks.
Following the path of the new Galaxy Explorer, I settled on another world. Hopefully it’s clearly Classic Space, and at the same time today’s design. I chose a new planet, to add color (the building and ship stand out better by the way), and make my point: that’s not the moon anymore, it’s a brave new world!
The Set
So here it is: the latest Patrol Craft, with amazing speed, maneuverability in space or atmosphere, vertical ascending reactor, and laser weapons (they are on duty there). The pilot chair is tailor-made, just so you know.
To monitor the area, the last generation tracking radar. Believe me, there’s no better around. And the radar operator will confirm it to you: you need that special rotating control chair to follow the pace.
The only problem: it needs so much energy. So the engineers planted there a fusion reactor. Literally. They said it would be safer that way. They didn’t explained why, it’s supposed to be reliable and working fine without refueling for the next hundred year or so. Anyway, their advice is to never lose the wrench for the fuse box. Why? Just in case, they said.
And to make everything works, there are 4 spacemen: a pilot, a radar officer, a tech guy (the one with the wrench for the fuse box) and a I-do-everything-else buggy driver. And the CCTV cameras? Well, Central Control on Earth said it’s standard precaution, the area is safe. But… it needs a military craft patrolling, right?
Stats
Full set: 1522 bricks
Craft: 656 bricks
Width 37.5cm
Length 20.1cm
Height 10.6cm (ground) 9.4cm (flying)
Tech buggy: 30 bricks
Tow buggy, tank & ladder: 103 bricks
4 classic spacemen
Conclusion
It’s not a grey baseplate with craters, I chose a full grey ship with green windshield but to me it’s full Classic Space, 40 years later. I designed it with the Galaxy Explorer in mind, and I put as much gameplay as I could, like I was still that kid driving a buggy on a moon floor made of pillows. I just hope you enjoy it.
So if you can imagine yourself playing with it or displaying it next to the Galaxy Explorer (or both), please support it and let’s open a new Classic Space era.
