Shin Godzilla

Godzilla has arrived in many forms since his first appearance in 1954, but Shin Godzilla is perhaps his most terrifying design. The 2016 film Shin Gojira (Shin Godzilla in America) is a reimagining of Godzilla as a terrifying eldritch horror that looks like it crawled up from the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean.

Hideaki Anno, creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, wrote and co-directed Shin Godzilla, and his influence is felt throughout the movie. The horrible destruction, existential terror, and satirizing of governmental failings all recall moments from Evangelion.

Shin Godzilla topped the Japanese box office in 2016. It won "Picture of the Year" at the 2016 Japan Academy Prize, with Anno winning a "Best Director" award.

And now it has the chance to be an adorable LEGO set!

Shin Godzilla UCS features a towering Godzilla with articulated limbs, neck, jaws, and tail. The jaws even split apart to recreate one of the most distinct features of the Shin design of Godzilla. A removable energy blast can be fitted into Godzilla's throat and removed with ease. Fans of the film will enjoy how the pieces used to build the tail nod to the haunting final shot.

The set will also come with Kayoco Anne Patterson, Special Envoy for the President of the United States, and Rando Yaguchi, the hapless Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary whose title grows longer and longer over the course of the film.

At last count, Godzilla, his energy blast, and the minifigures took 2,999 pieces to build. The build uses a combination of Technic, Bionicle, and System parts for a challenging and engaging build. All parts exist in the colors used. I will be working on a physical build of the set while the Idea is in the submission phase, and I will be happy to share photos of the process via updates. Full credit to Toho Studios, Hideaki Anno, co-director Shinji Higuchi, and VFX director and designer Katsuro Onoe.
