The Last Organ Grinder
Even though I am 15 years old, I feel nostalgic when I see depictions of men making music on the street with barrel organs. Organ grinders lived a hard life, and they may not have been considered musicians, but it was through music that these operators of magical boxes made people smile.
Organs were often very intricate in design, as well as being marvels of engineering. Barrel organs function by a crank being turned, which operates the bellows and organ book. When a knob is turned, the organ grinder's arm will turn as if he were turning the crank himself. The organ book has simulated movement using a crankshaft, as though moving through the organ. His hat attaches to his left hand, allowing him to collect coins. I focused on the face and details of the organ grinder to try to capture the expression of these performers.
I think this would be a great set for collectors who would like to have more characters in their displays. This is my way of keeping this art, music and lifestyle alive.
