Mobile Rocket Launcher Redux
Like many born towards the end of the 1970s, my introduction to LEGO was through Classic Space. My very first set, and the one that captured my young imagination like no other, was #897, Mobile Rocket Launcher. It instilled in me a lifelong passion for the brick.
I wanted to bring the original set up to date with a more substantial build, while still retaining its core DNA, so all of the original play features that I loved so much as a kid remain intact: the radar dish can be angled through 90 degrees, the control desk is on a turntable with 360 degrees of rotation and the rocket itself mounted on a hinged platform, allowing it to be angled up to the stars for take off! The rocket and trailer are both detachable, just like they were back in the day.
I've replaced old parts and sub-assemblies with contemporary equivalents and utilized modern building techniques and current design language throughout. Hope it brings back some happy memories for all you Gen Xers out there!
