The Landscape Photographer

Much like building with Lego, landscape photography is a process of organizing pre-established and often seemingly disparate shapes into a cohesive and aesthetically harmonious form. This idyllic scene represents that process as our photographer ventures away from his cabin to capture the splendor of nature with his 8x10 large format camera. The base of the model features plants native to Yosemite National Park in California and includes yellow monkeyflower, whiteleaf manzanita, and a ponderosa pine tree. The photographer is standing atop a woody station wagon reminiscent of one used by Ansel Adams in a similar fashion in order to achieve the best view for the composition. The car’s wooden panels, as with the dirt road upon which it is parked, are examples of the ways in which humans have merged nature with invention.
