The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by the French writer Gaston Leroux and was first published as a serial in the French daily newspaper Le Gaulois from September 1909 to January 1910. It is one of my favourite novels and has been adapted a lot of times. The first, but unfortunately lost, film Das Phantom der Oper from 1916 and the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical from 1986 are just two items on a very long list that is constantly being continued. The protagonist Erik, better known as The Phantom, The Opera Ghost or The Angel of Music, is a very tragic figure. Terribly disfigured, despised by society and condemned to loneliness, he is also a musical and technical genius, blessed with an unearthly singing voice.
