Vintage Hot Rod Roadster

The classic hot rod roadster has held a lasting connection to car enthusiasts the world over, due to its unique sculpted and aggressive design, ease of customization and simplicity of construction. The number of unique hot rod roasters, either in their construction, modification or paint scheme is vast and seemingly never-ending.

Design Background

In all my LEGO travels, I've come across many roadster designs, but either they were super small scale, used too many 'illegal' connections, or were of the Technic variety, I wasn't fond of many of them. I've always wanted a display-scale, sleek model that could properly represent amongst the other amazing LEGO car models (here's looking at you Mustang).

This model took its inspiration from an original design of a classic sports car, but I quickly felt I could transpose this structure to the roadster you see here. I've spent many hours pouring over detailed images and have attempted to recreate as many 'core' features of the popular 1930's roadsters.

Design Features

At approximately 850 pieces, 14" long, by 6.5" wide and 5.2" high (with cover), this model features:

  • Removable (drop) top
  • Removable engine cowling (either sides or top, or both)
  • Removable brick-built engine
  • Opening rear-hinged doors
  • Opening trunk
  • Detailed interior, including reclining seat, gas and brake pedals and gear shifter
  • Nearly-studless design
  • Built to LEGO strength and connection standards
  • Uses currently-available colors and part molds

Variety

This model is presented in black and red, but the potential varieties are countless - one could model the car in red with white highlights, or yellow with black, or any other combination of colors to truly make this design unique to the builder. Different varieties of engine details or attachments could be added for even more customization. The model was also designed to use tiles and panels that afford sticker application in numerous areas - add some flames or a racing sticker and the model really shines. Finally, a 'garage floor' display base would be an amazing addition to the display.

I hope you like it, and thank you for your support!
