Sherlock Holmes: 221B Baker St.

"Elementary, my dear Watson..."

So is uttered by the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, to his friend and colleague, Dr. Watson.

Hello everyone, and welcome to my Sherlock Holmes: 221B Baker St. LEGO Ideas project proposal. In this idea is a LEGO rendition of the apartment that Holmes and Watson reside in, more specifically inspired by the 1939-1946 movie era distributed by 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures. In this era Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were portrayed by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce respectively and are arguably the most famous portrayal of our sleuthing heroes.

Who is Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character originally created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His first adventure was A Study in Scarlet, published in 1887, and since then Sherlock Holmes is the most famous consulting detective in the world. Holmes' specialty is in deductive reasoning, observation, and forensic science, and has helped clients the world over, including Scotland Yard! Whether he's either preoccupied with some discovery or stopping Prof. Moriarty's fiendish plot, Sherlock Holmes is the man to call to solve even the most complex mysteries!

What are some details about this set?

I have designed this set specifically after the Sherlock Holmes movies from 1939 to 1946. Since the movies were originally black-and-white, I had to imagine the proper colors with a little help from some colorized versions. The set was created using LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) modified and rendered using Bricklink's Stud.io 2.0.

According to the parts list, there are 553 bricks including the minifigures. Since this is a prototype, that is subject to change.

There are two minifigures involved: Holmes and Watson, portrayed as accurately as possible due to a limited selection from my respective softwares.

Included are the following:

  • A table for the duo to eat delicious meals cooked by Mrs. Hudson.
  • A little microscope and some odds-and-ends for Mr. Holmes to experiment with.
  • A typewriter for Dr. Watson to write his stories of their exploits.
  • Two sofas as the duo ponder about their adventures.
  • A window to take in that London air.

What made you decide on this set?

Growing up, my family and I have watched these old movies over and over again. While they may be dated for some, we were greatly entertained by these movies and have learned much about deductive reasoning and observation.

Why should I support Sherlock Holmes: 221B Baker St.?

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous characters the world over, even going so far as being in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most portrayed character. Basil Rathbone is one of the most famous - if not the most famous - and most accurate to play the character, even so much as extra voice clips being used for the character in Disney's The Great Mouse Detective! His catchphrase, "Elementary, my dear Watson", was popularized by this series. Furthermore, a LEGO set starring this detective would capture the imagination of not only Sherlock Holmes fans, but any LEGO fan young and old!
