Chariot racing fans, get ready for championship racing! In red, Sebastian will take on long-time racer George in blue. In green, newcomer Hippolytus seeks to gain parity with both seasoned racers. Martin, the official, will manage the race and make sure that the racers abide by the rules. Upon the drop of a white cloth, the three men and twelve horses will work their hardest to get around the track eight times. Martin will keep track of progress by flipping a traditional metallic dolphin for each lap completed. View the images to see this racing story unfold!
Although this builder is an historian by education, dealing with history is not something that happens on a daily basis. So, the opportunity to research chariot racing for this project was fun and enlightening. Hopefully, this set will bring about enjoyment and spur a curiosity of history. Feedback and constructive comments are welcome for this submission, and all other ideas. Thank you in advance for posting the love!
History:
This set was inspired by Circus Maximus, though artistic license was taken.
The dropping of the white cloth and the metallic dolphins are based on historical evidence. (Dolphins were used because in the ancient world they were thought to be the fastest creature.) The three main civilizations that conducted chariot racing are represented in this set, complete with attire that most closely matched their respective civilization. George, in blue, represents Greece. Sebastian, in red, represents the Roman Empire. Hippolytus, in green, represents the Byzantine Empire.
