The model shows a bacterial virus--a bacteriophage--made from lego. Bacterial viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, reaching abundances of 10 million particles per milliliter in sea water. Bacteriophage infect bacterial cells and multiply, eventually bursting the bacteria and releasing multiple new bacteriophage particles into the environment. The human gut contains many billion bacteriophages.
The model was featured as the image of the month at the scientific journal mBio (March/April 2016, volume 7, issue 2).
The model was made by Marshall Bushman and Frederic Bushman, a father-son team.
