Designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković, the National and University Library of Kosovo in Pristina was completed in 1982. Stylistically it is difficult to classify, although Metabolism is most often applied. I visited the library in 2022 and was instantly smitten. Despite its stark, even intimidating appearance, the complex superstructure borrows heavily from diverse design traditions in the Balkans. The result is utterly original, highly photogenic, and unlike any other building in the former Yugoslavia. The exterior does not betray the beautiful, even delicate interiors, which cannot be portrayed here!
