Bauhaus Building, Dessau
The Bauhaus building in Dessau, with its straight-lined structure and its sleek facades, hardly shows its age of 90 years! No wonder, it had essential impact on modern architecture. Designed by Walter Gropius, built in 1926, it housed the Bauhaus art school, and the likes of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer and Wassily Kandinsky worked here as professors.
Today, the building presents itself accurately restored, and is listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation presents exibitions aubout the history and the works of the Bauhaus, in an ambience that is a sight on its own. For Berlin visitors it is doubtlessly worth the excurtion to Dessau, and if you are up to spend more time, you can even stay a night in the original Bauhaus student appartments.
In any case, a building that must not be missed out in the Lego Architecture series! For the Lego model I have orientated on the Bauhaus tradition, with a simple construction and a clean design that focuses on the essence. The model consists of 700 parts, and has the size of an A4 sheet of paper.
In 2019, the Bauhaus will be celebrating its centenary, so the Lego model would come at the right time for playfully experiencing this pivotal era of architecture.
