Rail Handcar

There are many iconic trains and carriages out there. But there is one carriage in particular that pretty much embodies the railway and yet is forever over-looked: the Handcar. This model took a month to finalise and I had a ball making it.

To anyone who cares, the original date that the first handcar was designed and made is unknown, as several machinists made their own designs at several different times, though some of the earliest ones were around as early as the late 1840. Despite their size (or lack of), they were essential to the operation of the early railways of America.

The model was specifically designed so the handles move up and down as it's pulled along, and is nice and smooth whilst doing it. It works in both directions and adds another dimension of realism to my train collection (there are other people into lego trains too, right?).
