Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens)

I've seen the LEGO Ideas Birds set and really wanted to make another bird set available. The design is completely original and I think it illustrates the classic posture of a Downy Woodpecker extremely well.

The Build:

I first built the bird with a Speed Champions set and then used Bricklink Stud.io to make the stand and the tree stump. I used the 2x2 plates with the octagonal bar rim in the tree stump. The woodpecker is attached to the tree using a 1x2 transparent plate that connects to the belly. I use a lot of SNOT (studs not on top) in this build.

Why this Idea should Become an Official LEGO Set:

  • The build can make a great display piece on a desk or a shelf and will bring the love of nature into any room
  • LEGO has been making some great animal themed sets but only one bird themed one
  • This set will be fun and satisfying to build.

Piece and Color Count:

The whole model is 339 pieces and the woodpecker by itself is 128 pieces. I used 14 colors; tan, brown, dark brown, light bluish gray, metallic black, black, earth orange, green, bright green, dark tan, dark bluish gray, transparent clear, and red.

Illegal Techniques or Custom Pieces:

No illegal techniques but I used part designer to make the name plate.

Cons of the Build:

I think the build looks amazing but there are a few cons. The first is the feet. The feet look really weird because I couldn't think of a way to make the feet realistic but stay on the scale the woodpecker is on. The other is the tail. Downy Woodpeckers usually have spots on the white part of their tails and I can’t do that without Part Designer. Part Designer doesn’t have 1x4 wedges available to print on.
