The Complete Saga
This is a realistic portrayal of current NASA proposals for sending people to Mars. Each scene depicts a step along the way, showing how the different aspects come together towards the ultimate goal.
Phase 1 (KSC): Where it all begins. The new NASA Space Launch System will support larger payloads than ever before, with various vehicle configurations planned for personnel and cargo.
Phase 2 (LOP-G): Currently in development, the LOP-G will remain in continuous lunar orbit, although it won't be permanently occupied. Orion spacecraft will convey astronauts here from Earth.
Phase 3 (DST): From the LOP-G staging point, the crew will set out for Mars in the DST, which incorporates a specialised habitation module to facilitate the extended trip.
Phase 4 (MBC): Based on a design concept commissioned by NASA, the MBC will be deployed to Mars in preparation for human arrival. It will serve as the primary hub for scientific research and, eventually, excursions to the planet surface.
