Coast Guard Helicopter: Trammel of Archimedes
Out in the open seas a mighty coast guard helicopter comes to the rescue of a little raft.
Helicopters are engineering marvels. Their vertical take-off and hovering technology makes them some of the most important vehicles for accessing isolated areas where other vehicles cannot reach.
This animated model simulates the spinning of a hovering helicopter in the rough seas using a mechanism called Trammel of Archimedes. The mechanism allows the helicopter to have planetary motion, spinning on two axis in a similar fashion to the earth spinning around the sun.
The model is fascinating to watch. The mechanism shuttles are always crossing paths but never collide. It runs smoothly, is sturdy, and looks good from all angles. Most importantly, it is realistic and fun to play with!
The model has 193 pieces. See below for a video of a working real-life prototype. Please note the not all the pieces and colours are accurate in the prototype video.
