ABOUT YOURSELF

  1. Who are you?
    Luz Keegstra.

  2. Where are you from?
    I’m from the Netherlands.

  3. What do you study or do for a living?
    I work in a garden.

  4. What hobbies do you have?
My biggest hobbies are illustration and writing, but I also like photography, playing Minecraft, and trying to keep my plants alive. And let’s not forget about building LEGO, of course!

  5. Do you have a personal LEGO portfolio website that you can share with us?
    I have an Instagram, @cozybricks.

  6. Have you created any LEGO MOCs (my own creations) that you’re particularly proud of? What is it, why are you proud of it and do you have a photo of it?
Yes, a lot actually. My absolute favorite MOCs are the tiny bonsai trees I made. They got me back into LEGO after almost six years of not building.

  7. How and when did your interest in LEGO products come about?
From childhood. My siblings and I all really loved LEGO as kids. My eldest brother never grew out of it, and neither did I.

  8. What does the LEGO hobby mean to you? How does it fit into your life? E.g. build, display, meetups, play the games or 'just' watch the cartoons.
I mostly build LEGO in the holidays, when I don’t have to focus on my art. Sometimes I build with my brother or friends, but usually by myself. I have played the LEGO Builder’s Journey game, which I highly recommend.

  9. What is your favorite LEGO theme (current or past)? Why? And has any theme inspired your building style or preference in any particular way?
As a kid, I always loved the two LEGO Avatar The Last Airbender sets. I don’t own either, but they always inspired me to build my own when I was young. I guess you can see that in this LEGO build.

  10. What is your favorite official LEGO set ever? Why?
I absolutely adore the LEGO Ideas Winnie the Pooh set. It was one of my favorite sets to build, and the fun started with the nicely designed instructions.

  11. What is your favorite LEGO element? Why?
SNOT bricks XD. I use so many in all my builds.

ABOUT YOUR PROJECT

  1. Where did your interest in this particular model come from?
From miniature builds I found on Pinterest, as well as a particular build made by First Order Lego. The floating city they made is beautiful and was a big inspiration for this build. I always wanted to build something that looked like it wasn’t obeying the laws of physics.

  2. How long did the process of making the project take and what did you have to research? What kind of prep, research and design phases did you go through to produce your creation?
About one or two weeks. I mostly wing my ideas, including this one. I do make a Pinterest board before I start, that I can look at whenever I want. And when I face challenges, I usually look at tutorials on YouTube. I like to keep the building experience raw and welcome changes made along the way.

  3. What special challenges or frustrations did you face creating the model? What was the most difficult part to recreate?
Having a limited number of bricks. I did not have the parts to do everything I wanted in the build, but sometimes that can create wonderful things. For example, I had to add waves in the water because I didn’t have enough transparent blue tiles. Also, the floating rock was hard to create, and I eventually had to build it upside-down to get the effect I wanted.

  4. If you could talk to yourself before you started on this project, what would you tell him/her? What do you know now that you wish you knew then?
I would tell her nothing and let her figure it out. She’s got this!

  5. How long did it take to complete the model? Did you finish it fairly quickly, or did it take a long time? And how did the build time compare to the time you spent promoting your Product Idea to reach 10,000 supporters?
The build took three or four days to build, once I had a good idea of what I wanted. I had a week off, so it went rather quickly. Promoting took around a year. Luckily, I studied graphic design, which helped a lot with photography and making everything look pretty.

  6. How did it feel when you reached the magic 10,000 votes and how long did it take?
It felt surreal. But when I hit 3,000 supporters, I did think to myself that this might actually get to 10K. My brother kept me up to date with statistics and how long it would take for me to get there. It took around a year.

ABOUT LEGO IDEAS

  1. Do you have any useful advice about creating a successful LEGO Ideas Product Idea?
Do look at the ideas that reached 10K, and the ideas that have been approved. It will give you a lot of insight on what to build and what not to build.

  2. What (if any) methods did you use to advertise and attract support to your Product Idea?
Try and make a video about it if you can and post it on as many social media platforms as possible.

  3. What is your favorite LEGO Ideas Product Idea (besides your own of course)? Are there any Product Ideas you think have been overlooked?
I have always been a fan of the Gravity Falls and Studio Ghibli builds that keep popping up on LEGO ideas, and I would like one of them on display in my room.

  4. What is it about the platform that attracts you? What tips would you give to anyone who is thinking about uploading an idea?
When you think you have a good idea, go for it and have fun doing it. That’s the most important thing, I think.

  5. Do you have plans to submit any other Product Ideas in the future? If yes, can you give us a hint what that might be?
Yes, and it might be medieval but who knows? That might change.
