ABOUT YOURSELF

  1. Who are you?
    Jakab Kovács.

  2. Where are you from?
I’m from Hungary, I live in Ellend, in a small village.

  3. How old are you?
    16 years old.

  4. What do you study or do for a living?
I’m studying advanced math and physics at Leőwey Klára Highschool, Pécs.

  5. What hobbies do you have?
Besides Lego, I like designing and drawing buildings and landscapes. I also like sports with my friends and with my family, for example, volleyball, football, and skateboarding. And I like watching movies.

  6. Do you have a personal LEGO portfolio website that you can share with us?
Yes, I have an Instagram profile: @j.k._brick

  7. Have you created any LEGO MOCs (my own creations) that you’re particularly proud of? What is it, why are you proud of it and do you have a photo of it?
I have a Medieval Kingdom MOC, there is a Medieval castle with a village. I’m proud of it because I put a lot of details into this MOC. For example, I used as many plants as I could in the landscape, and I used a lot of modified bricks and plates for the stone wall to give the stone walls a period look. It’s also full of life as there are a lot of little stories with animals and minifigures.
I am also very proud of my The Shire: Hobbiton and the Medieval Town Centre MOC.

  8. How and when did your interest in LEGO products come about?
I've loved Lego for as long as I can remember. At first, like all children, I felt that Lego City was my own. Then, as I got older, more and more complicated sets appeared in my life, and then the construction of Lego sets turned from instructions to building Lego MOCs.

  9. What is the LEGO hobby to you? What does it mean to you? How does it fit in your life? E.g. build, display, meetups, play the games or 'just' watch the cartoons.
For me, the Lego hobby means relaxation and creation. And I build with Lego, especially MOCs.

  10. What is your favourite LEGO theme (current or past)? Why? And has any theme inspired your building style or preference in any particular way?
My favourite Lego themes are the Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, Kingdoms, and Castle. I love Lord of the Rings and Hobbit because I’m a fantasy movie fan, and I like the buildings and creatures found in that world. I like kingdoms and castle themes because I also like the medieval ages, the stone textures in the castles and the houses, the bushy/wild vegetation, the animals, and the minifigures in this theme.

  11. What is your favourite official LEGO set ever? Why?
The Pirates of Barracuda Bay was my firs biggest set and as soon as I saw the first pictures of it, I knew I needed it because I like ships.

  12. What is your favourite LEGO element? Why?
The tiles with wooden grain, because these pieces add more texture to my builds, and I can use these parts in almost every styled MOC.

  13. Is there a LEGO designer (official LEGO designer or fan designer) who you are inspired by and look up to? Who and why?
Ralf Ranghaal, because I love Ralf Ranghaal’s MOCs with unique style and unique use of parts.

  14. Is there one or more particular LEGO-related websites (not official LEGO websites) that you visit often and/or are inspired by?
Rebrickable, since a lot of people - including myself - upload building instructions for MOCs. This way you can learn a lot about the structure of Lego MOCs and of course, you can get a lot of inspiration from other designers.

ABOUT YOUR PROJECT

  1. Where did your interest in this particular model come from?
I wanted to make a MOC full of magic, so I immediately thought about the wizard and fantasy theme, so I combined these themes in this MOC (I put some medieval and Lord of the Rings-styled sections).

  2. How long was the process of making the project, and what did you have to research as well? What kind of prep, research and design phases did you go through to produce your creation?
It lasted me 25 days. I was inspired a lot by the internet, and after that, I drew different building designs about that theme, I refined the designs then I thought about the Lego techniques, which I wanted to use for the curved shapes and the bushy vegetation.

  3. What special challenges did you face creating the model? What was the most difficult part to recreate?
The most difficult part was the stonework because it was hard to connect with the lower, cloud section, and also difficult to make a strong base for the model, including the cloud section and the rockwork area.

  4. If you could talk to yourself before you started on this project, what would you tell them? What do you know now that you wish you knew then?
January 21, 2023: Future Jakab: Please pay more attention to the stonework stability, if not, you will have a lot of trouble with it!
When I thought that I finished with the MOC, I realized it was not stable, so I spent a lot of time with the process to make the base stronger.

  5. How long did it take to complete the model? Did you finish it fairly quickly, or did it take a long time? And how did the build time compare to the time you spent promoting your Product Idea to reach 10,000 supporters?
Approximately I finished within 20 days. I spent much less time promoting.

  6. How did it feel when you reached the magic 10,000 votes and how long did it take?
It was my first product Idea which reached the 10K supporters, so it was amazing. I was with my family and we were waiting for the last supporters. It lasted for 66 days.

  7. Approximately how many LEGO bricks did you use to create your model?
    I used approximately 3000 pieces.

  8. What is your favourite building technique or part/section that you’ve incorporated into your Product Idea?
When I used Hose, Rigid pieces, I bent these and put them onto Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip pieces, after I put onto these 1 x 2 tiles, this is the roof technique. I also like the technique for the rounded towers. My favourite part use is the green shear pieces for the bushy plants on the wall.

  9. If you built your model digitally, what software did you use to build and render your model?
I used Bricklink Studio to build the model and for the rendering.

  10. If you used custom stickers or prints for your design, how did you create them or where did you get them?
    I didn’t use custom stickers.

ABOUT LEGO IDEAS

  1. Do you have any useful advice about creating a successful LEGO Ideas project?
I think that if you make any idea out of Lego, the way you do it is very important. For example, I like to make the idea by using such shapes and curves, you don't see often. I really like complicated shapes and the process of their realization. Furthermore, promotion is very important and it can be a huge help if you are selected for the Staff Pick category.

  2. What (if any) methods did you use to advertise and attract support to your Product Idea?
I shared my product idea on my Instagram page and told some friends and cognates to support my project.

  3. What is your favourite LEGO Ideas Product Idea (besides your own of course)? Are there any Product Ideas you think have been overlooked?
My favourite Lego Ideas Product Idea is the Living On The Edge by Ralf Ranghaal. And I think the Dennis The Menace: Mr. Wilson’s House by BrickMocBay is very overlooked.

  4. What is it about the platform that attracts you? What tips would you give to anyone who is thinking about uploading an idea
I like all of the different Ideas on this platform, and of course very good that the Product Ideas can be made into an official Lego set. Very important that the quality of the images and the rendering, that they are edited, and that all details are visible. Furthermore, the idea and its implementation are also very important.

  5. Do you have plans to submit any other Product Ideas in the future? If yes, can you give us a hint what that might be?
Yes, I want to build fantasy-styled structures.
