  • 2016 second review

As we mentioned in our blog post early this month, we were running a little behind schedule as we were still finalising the results of the Second 2016 Review Results. But the wait is officially over!

Over the past several months, the LEGO Review Board has carefully reviewed 12 fascinating projects that reached 10,000 supporters between May and September 2016, our second review qualification period of 2016. Lise, our Marketing Manager, shares the results:

Women of NASA
A big congratulations to 20tauri on becoming the next official LEGO Ideas fan designer! As a science editor and writer, with a strong personal interest for space exploration as well as the history of women in science and engineering, Maia Weinstock’s Women of NASA project was a way for her to celebrate accomplished women in the STEM professions. In particular those who’ve made a big impact through their work at NASA.

We’re really excited to be able to introduce Maia’s Women of NASA set for its inspirational value as well as build and play experience.

Design, pricing, and availability

We’re still working out the final product design, pricing and availably for the Women of NASA set, so check back on LEGO Ideas in late 2017 or early 2018 for more details.

Still considering Voltron - Defender of the Universe

The LEGO Review Board is still considering the Voltron - Defender of the Universe project by len_d69. Our final decision will take a little extra time, and we’ll share an update in the Third 2016 Review Results announcement.

Next Review Results Summer 2017

The next batch of LEGO Ideas projects are already in review. We’re considering these projects that reached 10,000 supporters between September 2016 and January 2017 as possible future LEGO sets. We’ll share results of the Third 2016 LEGO review period in the summer of 2017.

We voted for women of NASA, we got it. Why is everyone so negative? Let's give a chance; apollo rocket is also coming out soon!

As I said in other comments. I love Voltron set, I like Veneno set and Veneno would be wonderful set if it can be redesigned as a technic version. For me those sets are the best ones.

Why not the Veneno? :( I was hoping that would make it, but I'll have to wait until next review for a set I'd buy. Surely one of the four I want will get though?

My congratulations to Maia (20tauri) for the Women of NASA set.
I was disappointed I missed getting to cast a vote for the set as it went through too quickly for me but all good now.
I look forward to blending them into my classic space display.
I was slow on ordering the Research Institute and nearly missed it entirely so I will be pre-ordering at least 1 for myself and 1 for my daughter as soon as possible.
As for the boys complaining, sorry dudes it's not just a boy's toy any more :)

We are not complaining about that!! We are upset because this set was chosen over much more qualified submissions, and that this set has NO real building experience, we are NOT idiots, alright?? We respect and love the minifigures in this now to be set, very creative and a GREAT idea, but chosen over better stuff?? Really??

I support VOLTRON, I don't complain because there are women minifigs, I will complain if there are only men minifigs too. I complain because the building experience of VOLTRON (or other projects) is better that five minifigs. That's is the point. The point is not if there are women or men.

I don't get a lot of these comments. A lot of the other ideas overlap existing products, require specific licenses, or huge numbers of pieces. Big surprise --> sets like that have been getting panned since day one. Sure the "build" portion of the NASA women could be more interesting, and it would have been nice to honor a few men, but this set was the most distinct. The Women of Science set sold out online almost instantly and I'm glad science enthusiasts will have a second chance at that sort of set.

We didn't want a minifigure only set, where's the meat and potatoes of this set?? The Lego Ideas guidelines even say NO minifigure only stuff!!

Though the minifigures are certainly the core focus of the set, it's not a minifigure-only set. It has several small builds plus the frame, which distinguishes it from something like the Dark Bucket project, which was for just minifigures.

This "set" could only been considered as a promotional set.
But giving money for this as an ideas set... no way.

It has no place between real sets. DISAPPOINTED.

I'm psyched to get this set for my son who loves NASA and loves history. Thanks lego and congrats to the builder! Fun idea! I'm sympathetic to those who wish for more complicated builds but at the same time I'm happy to see a set that will probably be less expensive added to idea family. It's nice to have a range. And I love the idea of having unusual mini-figs with smaller sets. I would have LOVED to have this set as a kid (I collected the space legos and loved all things NASA). The comments here are disappointingly negative, which is kind of a bummer. Come on guys... it's not as if only girls can look up to girls and boys can look up to boys. What century are we living in? These are awesome scientists who have been less recognized and the set is timely with Hidden Figures having been popular this year. My son and I will love this because we both love space and loved that movie.

Meanwhile... Hey Lego! Please make more ideas sets! We love them! It's sad to see things we've rooted for not make it. But thanks for this one!

Full disclosure I was rooting for the Addams Family Mansion. That looks so fun to build.

No Addams Family Mansion? No Ada Lovelace? Boo! Why don't any of the really cool ideas ever get selected?

People are getting defensive and assuming that many of us are upset about the fact that there are women in the set. That is far from most people's issue with the set. The problem is that this offers nothing for us to build. If you want to inspire my daughter, she needs to create a real set, not just put minifigures together. Please give us an actual set to build!!!
